Safety?
Our number one priority is to return you in better shape than
we received you in. Our industry high camper to counselor
ratio of four to one and three to one on all adventures, coupled
with demanding leadership requirements ensure the highest
quality of safety. These requirements include a B.A., fluency
in Spanish, and overall strong physical condition. In addition,
one of the following certifications is also required WEMT
(Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician), EMT (Emergency
Medical Technician), or WFR (Wilderness First Responder).
Extensive first aid kits as well VHF radios and satellite
phones are on hand at all times. Life jackets are used on
all boating excursions and only the highest quality ropes
and harnesses are used on all of our tree climbing and waterfall
rappelling adventures. In the event of an emergency requiring
medical attention that is beyond the scope of our group leaders,
there are two hospitals within a twenty-mile radius to all
of our adventures. Included in the tuition every camper receives
travel medical insurance that will cover any medical expenses
within Costa Rica as well as emergency evacuation to the U.S.
if necessary. Group leaders consistently monitor proper nutrition,
water intake, and application of sunscreen. Rest assured that
every necessary step is taken to ensure your safety.

What's Inculded?
Camp Costa is an all-inclusive camp. All food, lodging and
activities are included. Travel medical insurance is included
in tuition as well. We also provide all of our campers with
a Camp Costa beach towel, t-shirt, and DVD video highlighting
some of their session's finer moments. It is recommended that
each camper bring $100 - $200 dollars with them as there will
be opportunities to purchase some of the beautiful arts and
crafts of the areas local artist to bring home as gifts and
souvenirs.
-
Experience Necessary?
Most of our campers have little or no experience with the
types of adventures found on our itinerary and that's great!
With the guidance and support of our leaders you will gain
the confidence and security to participate in all of our wonderful
adventures.
-
Transportation?
Most of our adventures take place within walking distance
to camp; however anywhere from one to three sport utility
vehicles (depending on enrollment) are on hand for transportation
outside of the immediate area.
-
Electronics?
Because Camp Costa relies solely on solar-power, the only
electronics that we recommend bringing are digital cameras.
There are no outlets for plugging in video cameras, portable
DVD players, laptops, bathroom appliances etc.
-
Meals? Special Diets?
Our highly experienced chef prepares tastier meals than you
will find at any other camp in the world. For breakfast you
will enjoy fresh fruits, a variety of egg dishes, plantains,
traditional Costa Rican gallo pinto (you'll love it!) and
fresh blended smoothies for added protein. Lunches are usually
packed for the journey and consist of sandwiches, fruit, chips
and a drink. Dinners are an all out feast with four course
meals consisting of an assortment of veggies, salads, fresh
fish caught daily (perhaps by you!), pastas and delicious
desserts like our fresh pineapple upside down cake. All in
all you will find our meals to be the perfect blend of great
taste and healthy nutrition. We are able to work around most
dietary limitations as long as we have ample notice to make
the necessary preparations.
-
Co-ed? Sleeping Arrangements?
This is a co-ed camp with separate bathrooms and showers for
boys and girls. The lodge is also segmented into four sleeping
quarters with three campers and one counselor of the same
gender in each section.
-
Calling Home?
We will have a cell phone on hand for you to phone home and
vice-versa, however, only one call upon arrival and one call
upon departure is encouraged.
-
Flying?
All of our clients that are under the age of 18 will be received
by Camp Costa staff at the international airport in San Jose,
Costa Rica. Our staff will proceed to make a call home as
soon as your child has safely arrived and is in our presence.
Clients over the age of 18 will be received at the domestic
airport in Puerto Jimenez. All clients should contact Camp
Costa prior to booking flights as we may be able to accommodate
you further.
-
Passport?
You will need a valid passport in order to travel to Costa
Rica. After we arrive all passports and other valuables may
be locked away in our safe so that you don't lose them.
-
Vaccinations? Inoculations?
All of our water is fresh and purified so sickness is extremely
rare, especially in the area of Matapalo. No vaccinations
or inoculations are necessary.
-
Is costa Rica Safe?
Costa Rica is very safe. Crime is very low and is limited
to petty theft. With a democratic government that is over
a hundred years old and no standing army, and very close ties
the United States, Costa Rica is politically stable and has
no threat of guerilla warfare or terrorism of any sort.
-
Spanish?
It is not necessary to speak any Spanish at all.
-
Family Reunions?
We strongly encourage family members to meet you in Matapalo
either during or after your session. We have a large selection
of unique rental homes and lodges both on the beaches and
in the jungles of matapalo for your family to choose from.
These are available with a chef and housekeeper, an SUV, and
an itinerary consisting of everything from massages, mud masks
and yoga classes to any of the exciting adventures that are
available through Camp Costa.
